“I’ve been working hard to follow my dream step by step, and I am very lucky to love what I do today,” Yuvacharaskul enthuses, admitting that it was the chance to do her internship with Jill Stuart that sealed her fate to become a fashion designer. It provided an opportunity to contribute her textile development skills for the brand, and she also helped to set up Stuart’s Spring 2008 collection for New York Fashion Week. “I was overwhelmed by the opportunity to work in an international fashion house – even if it was only as an intern.”
For her Fall/Winter 2010 collection, the designer is letting her inspiration take her to a whole new level: Catfight for Spotlight. Sometimes in a beauty competition, contenders will go as far as to sabotage other competitors by slashing or ruining their gowns with makeup, or by starting a vicious rumour – whatever it takes to get their hands on that coveted crown. One wonders how Yuvacharaskul translates this into her designs, and she’s quick to explain: “The collection signature prints are the result of a catfight. The slits are cleverly hidden and can only be seen when walking, and all the nasty rumours are screen-printed on tees and tanks.”
True to her design reputation, mini dresses dominate the entire collection. “I like my women to be sexy, yet elegant. She is comfortable to flaunt her sensuality by revealing a little skin,” Yuvacharaskul says. So the half-crop top, high-waist shorts and long slits in evening gowns to flash a bit of leg come as no surprise. The key palette is nude to ooze more sexiness, leave more to the imagination. So what’s the biggest challenge for her during the design process? “Pushing a boundary a little further. Hopefully, our customers can fit into shorter dresses or shorts and become a little sexier,” she smiles. milin.com
