Hong Kong designer Danny Fang’s chess piece-shaped lamps marry novelty with timeless design.

Maneuvering one’s way through a game of chess requires a certain level of thoughtfulness – as does picking out the most suitable lighting for one’s home. Combine the two together and you have the Checkmate lamp collection. Created by Hong Kong-based designer Danny Fang for the hip Pinoy design house, Hive, the hanging lamps—modeled after key chess pieces—mixes a dash of whimsy in with classic functionality. Varying in size and available in a range of flattering neutral shades, the lampshades are composed of Salago pulp fibre, spawning an organic, tactile surface which functions as the perfect foil to the lamps’ quirkily fashioned forms. Flecked with subtle hints of gold leaf, the reflective elements play off the light teasingly, allowing for a warm, cozy glow. Radiating provenance, Checkmate’s prominent focus on materiality also resonates with Hive’s penchant for promoting designs that make the most out of locally sourced, self-sustaining materials while paying due respect to traditional handicraft techniques.
